Biography

Newcastle junior was playing fullback with Balmain in 1946 when a great game for Sydney in a minor rep match against South Coast gave him the inside running for Test selection against Great Britain. Parkinson played in all three Ashes Tests in the first series contested after World War II. In a courageous performance in the Third Test he played the majority of the match with a broken leg rather than leave Australia further depleted (Arthur Clues had been sent off and there were no replacements allowed). Parkinson was a member of the Balmain teams that won the premiership in 1944 and lost to Easts in the 1945 final but the injury suffered in the deciding Test of the Ashes series kept him out of the club's grand final win over St George in 1946. He went to Babinda Queensland the following season but returned to the club in 1948.

Dave "Dasher" Parkinson came from the Cessnock club to Balmain in 1944. A full-back, he played for the Tigers in seasons 1944-46 and 1948. He did not play for Balmain in 1947, accepting a captain-coach position at Babinda in Queesnsland that year.
