Wests fielded two ineligible players in the penultimate round of the competition - Albert 'Ricketty' Johnston and Cec Barker, two players from Sydney. Wests scored the only victory of any team over Merthyr on the day, however the League decided to strip them of their 2 competition points for the illegal players. Wests then withdrew from the competition out of protest, after which the League awarded the 2 competitions for this game to Merthyr. This also meant Wests were not involved in the finals, allowing the fifth placed Westerns to be added as the fourth side in the Semi-Finals.
