According to the Newcastle Journal (17/2/84, p14), Frank Barrow was appointed as senior coach of Oldham after being assistant manager for the past 4 months. It also confirms that Peter Smethurst resigned "a fortnight ago," which would suggest it happened between the 1st Feb and 5th Feb matches. The following week, the Daily Mirror reported that Dave Cox (formerly of Castleford and Dewsbury) is to take over as Oldham team manager following the resignations of Peter Smethurst and Frank Barrow (25/2/84, p26). An obituary of Frank Myler (https://roughyeds.co.uk/2020/03/a-tribute-to-frank-myler-one-of-rugby-leagues-greatest-ever/) confirms that Frank Barrow only lasted "six days and one game — a dreadful performance in a 42-8 defeat Whitehaven, who celebrated their first win of the season". It then goes onto confirm that the coach of the youth team (Brian Gartland) took over for the remainder of the season, and official records make no mention of Dave Cox ever being coach.
