According to the Liverpool Echo (20/01/1986), Eric Hughes resigned as Widnes coach on the 20th of January in response to player Joe Lydon being signed at midnight by Wigan for a transfer fee of £100,000, which at the time was a world record.

Widnes manager Ron Close was quoted as saying "It is not our policy to sell established star players, but Wigan made us an offer that we could not turn down."

Outgoing coach Eric Hughes said "I told the chairman that if the club sold Joe Lydon I could not continue as coach."
