In October 2024, Salford received a B-grade in IMG’s classification system, placing them at risk of relegation. Long term financial pressures escalated in November when the club took a £500,000 advance on RFL funding, prompting league intervention and a mandatory £700,000 budget cut. Further to this, they were placed under a sustainability cap of £1.2 million (down from £2.1 million).

A takeover led by Swiss banker Dario Berta was announced in February, but delays in approval left the club in limbo. This led to a controversial decision in their Round 1 match against St Helens (15 February 2025), where Salford fielded a weakened side and suffered an 82–0 defeat—one of the worst in Super League history. Head coach Paul Rowley defended the move, refusing to "put half a team out with half from the reserves." The RFL launched an investigation into the circumstances.

Even after takeover approval, financial woes continued. Players and staff weren't paid on time in February and March, sparking training strikes and further departures, including key figures like Marc Sneyd, Brad Singleton, Tim Lafai, and Kallum Watkins. By April, CEO Chris Irwin admitted debts remained unresolved, going on to suggest the new owners prioritised stadium land development and were "not rugby league people".
