Biography

Australian RU Schoolboy rep on the tour of NZ in 1988 came to the Broncos after playing for Brisbane Wests in 1989. A handy utility forward who was a reserve in Brisbane's 14-6 win over St George in the 1993 grand final, Ryan was largely used on the interchange bench in his early career. The fourth Brisbane player cited and suspended during the disappointing 1994 season, it took him several years to secure a first grade position at lock. Ryan achieved rep success in Queensland’s Tri-Series competition during 1997’s Super League season but was relegated to the interchange bench in Brisbane’s grand final win in the Telstra Cup grand final. He finally got his chance in State of Origin football in a successful Queensland team dominated by Brisbane players in 1998, but missed the Broncos’ grand final win because of suspension. At the end of 1999, Ryan left the club to play Rugby Union with the ACT Brumbies.
